Textiles Secretary addresses inaugural session of National Handloom Designers’ Conclave

The National Handloom Designers’ Conclave was held in New Delhi to provide a platform for Indian weavers and designers to showcase their products and gain access to markets. Addressing the inaugural session, Textiles Secretary Ms. Neelam Shami Rao emphasised the importance of adapting to changing market preferences to increase the income of weavers and designers. She highlighted the role of innovative and market-oriented designs in strengthening sales of handloom products and encouraged weavers to improve product designs to enhance their market appeal. The Secretary also acknowledged the contribution and excellence of weavers and designers from across the country in promoting India’s handloom sector.
The conclave brought together weavers and designers from different parts of the country, providing opportunities to showcase their products and strengthen market linkages. The event also featured recognition of talent in handloom design, with the Textiles Secretary felicitating the winner of the National Handloom Design Contest. The initiative highlights the importance of design, innovation and market access in strengthening the handloom ecosystem and improving income opportunities for artisans. Greater alignment between traditional weaving skills and evolving consumer preferences can support the promotion of Indian handloom products and help weavers expand their reach in domestic and international markets.
