The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced on Thursday that it has signed an Implementation Agreement (IA) with the Australian Space Agency (ASA) to enhance cooperation in space activities between the two nations. The agreement will specifically support the recovery of crew and crew modules for India’s Gaganyaan mission, the country’s first crewed spaceflight programme. The IA was signed on November 20 in Bengaluru by the Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) Director at ISRO, Mr. D K Singh, and General Manager of the Space Capability Branch at ASA, Mr. Jarrod Powell, in Canberra.

As part of the Gaganyaan programme, ISRO aims to demonstrate the capability to conduct a Low Earth Orbit mission with an Indian Crew Module carrying up to three crew members for up to three days, with the safe recovery of the module. The IA will see Australian authorities collaborate with Indian officials to support search and rescue operations and module recovery in the event of a contingency during the ascent phase, particularly if it occurs near Australian waters. The partnership reflects the enduring strategic relationship between India and Australia, with both space agencies committed to exploring current and future opportunities for collaboration.
