The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, graced the convocation ceremony of the Footwear Design and Development Institute in New Delhi

Smt. Droupadi Murmu, the current President of India, addressed the graduation ceremony held at Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) located in New Delhi, where she spoke on how the industry grows with India becoming a global economy. The President stated that India is gaining strength as a global economic player, moving towards self-sufficiency, supported by its government’s active policies and a strong manufacturing environment. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), through its Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, has defined the footwear industry as a ‘Champion Sector’ and continues to assist the industry with special promotion incentives and support to improve its competitiveness while increasing its opportunities to invest in the business.
The President noted that India ranks second in the world as both a manufacturer and consumer of footwear and urged the young graduates of FDDI to use this momentum to take ownership of their own companies, innovate within the footwear industry, and create jobs for all who desire to work. The establishment of the FDDI and the University of Northampton MoU was a significant highlight of the graduation ceremony and creates opportunities for collaboration between these two educational institutions as part of the India–UK Free Trade Agreement. This partnership focuses on providing sustainable materials and developing closed-loop production systems in order to promote environmentally friendly methods of producing footwear. The President asked the graduates to be part of building India’s global image by creating high-quality footwear designs that are sustainable through innovative product designs.
