President Ms. Droupadi Murmu lauded the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as the architect of the nation’s financial transformation, citing its role in enhancing financial inclusion, maintaining monetary stability, and fostering economic growth. Speaking at the central bank’s 90th anniversary in Mumbai, Maharashtra, she highlighted RBI’s efforts in ensuring the resilience of India’s financial system amid global uncertainties. She credited the central bank for its instrumental role in expanding financial inclusion through regulatory support for initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, which has particularly benefited women account holders.
She also praised RBI for positioning India as a global leader in digital payments, particularly through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which has made transactions seamless, secure, and cost-effective. Additionally, she acknowledged the central bank’s contributions towards environmental sustainability by promoting green finance through initiatives such as the Green Deposit Framework and priority sector lending for eco-friendly projects. She emphasised that RBI’s journey over nine decades has closely aligned with government policies, facilitating macroeconomic stability and essential financial reforms.
