Total power generated in the country grew by more than 8% year-on-year in 2021-22 and by 9% in 2022-23

According to the information provided by the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy Mr. R.K. Singh, India’s electricity generation from renewable and non-renewable sources for the years 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, and the current year 2023-24 (until June 2023) was 1,373,089.65 million units (MU), 1,484,366.17 MU, 1,617,722.70 MU, and 437,039.94 MU, respectively.

In 2023-24 (upto June 2023), the power generation from non-renewable resources was 332,308.80 (thermal) and 10,218.10 (nuclear), while the power generation from renewable energy sources was 34,521.90 (hydro) and 59,991.14 (other sources).

The Minister also stated that the country's power generation from renewable energy sources has increased over the past three years, as a result of numerous government initiatives to promote renewable energy in the nation. In 2020-21, the power generation stood at 297,547.03 MU, while for 2021-22 it was 322,539.63 MU, and 365,650.94 MU for 2022-23.
