Tourism Sector Emerged as Major Pillar of Economy and Important Source of Employment: Union Minister Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated that the tourism sector is no longer limited to travel, recreation and leisure, but has emerged as a major pillar of the economy and an important source of employment, addressing the National Tourism Conclave organised by ASSOCHAM in New Delhi. The sector continues to grow despite global and geopolitical uncertainties, with domestic tourism registering a growth rate of 12.5% last year and more than 428 crore domestic tourist visits recorded across the country, alongside over 2.53 crore foreign tourist visits. Effective destination management and the quality of tourist experiences are crucial to strengthening India's image as a global tourism destination. Training and capacity building for all tourism stakeholders, particularly frontline personnel such as guides, taxi drivers and hospitality workers, stating that the principle of Atithi Devo Bhava must be reflected in actual service delivery rather than remaining a slogan.

The government is working to develop 50 new tourist destinations, while additional investment is required to promote lesser-known locations, ease congestion at existing destinations and create new experiences for visitors. Sustained collaboration between the Centre, state governments and private-sector stakeholders would be essential to unlock India’s tourism potential. At the conclave, the ASSOCHAM-CBRE report, Reimagining Indian Tourism: Unlocking the Next Wave of Growth, was also released, highlighting how improved connectivity and emerging segments such as spiritual, MICE, wellness, cruise, rural and wildlife tourism are opening new avenues for growth and investment. ASSOCHAM President, Mr. Nirmal Kumar Minda, described the sector as being at a defining juncture in India’s progress towards a Rs. 94.97 lakh crore (US$ 1 trillion) tourism economy.
