TVS Motor Company plans to scale up its electric two-wheeler manufacturing capacity to 80,000 units a month by March 2027, as demand for electric scooters continues to rise in India. The company currently operates at a monthly capacity of 60,000-65,000 units, with the next level of capacity expansion already planned, according to Chief Executive Officer of TVS Motor Company Mr. K. N. Radhakrishnan. Electric vehicles (EVs) account for around 11-12% of the overall two-wheeler market, while their penetration in the scooter segment has exceeded 20%. TVS Motor Company’s electric two-wheeler sales rose to 1,86,186 units in the second quarter of FY27, from 80,009 units in the corresponding period last year. Its domestic sales grew 129%, compared with industry volume growth of 84%.
The electric two-wheeler industry expanded by nearly 75% in the first half of FY27. Mr. K. N. Radhakrishnan stated that EVs will continue to keep up the momentum and that TVS Motor Company, currently the market leader in electric two-wheelers, will continue to grow much ahead of the market. Other manufacturers are also expanding output as competition intensifies. Bajaj Auto is working to raise production capacity for its Chetak electric scooter to 80,000 units. Ather Energy is expanding capacity at its existing facility to more than 41,000 units and is also developing a new facility. Growth in the internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheeler segment, however, is expected to moderate in the second half, partly due to a high base in the year-ago period.
