Mr. Manikandan Thangarathnam has over 20 years of experience in global majors in spearheading engineering efforts. He spent 13 years with Amazon and built several core platforms and products. He headed engineering efforts for the Amazon Appstore in his most recent role and was instrumental in bootstrapping the Chennai office of the tech major and creating a large team of engineers.

Mr. Mani said in a statement, "It’s an exciting opportunity to join Uber and work together to transform the mobility landscape across the globe. As the world steps into a new normal, adaptability is going to be a key aspect to usher in growth. I look forward to leading the bright minds at Uber and innovating together for the world, one ride at a time".

Uber has recently recruited Mr. Jayaram Valliyur to lead its global finance technology team as a senior director. Jayaram, too, worked for 14 years at Amazon before Uber, where he was responsible for bootstrapping and scaling its development centre in India.

"Uber's India technology expansion plans are in line with its vision to make connectivity and distribution more available and to become the backbone of transportation in thousands of cities around the world," the ride-hailing company said in an official statement.

The company noted that mobility and platform teams are responsible for developing all innovations that transfer riders and enable drivers to earn on a competitive marketplace platform in cities around the world, elaborating on the roles of different teams at Uber.

Uber further noted that the Rider mobility team is working on the task of developing new services, including high-capacity vehicles (Uber buses) and car rentals, among others, to allow the next billion trips.

The Marketplace team is creating a highly accessible and scalable self-service portal for the setup, management and monitoring of Application Programming Interfaces (API) of each Uber business domain, the company concluded.
