Union Cabinet Approves ‘Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses’ with Rs. 11,440 Crore (US$ 1.24 billion) Outlay to Achieve Self-Sufficiency by 2030-31

The Union Cabinet has approved the ‘Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses’ with a financial outlay of Rs. 11,440 crore (US$ 1.24 billion) for the period 2025-26 to 2030-31, aiming to achieve self-sufficiency in pulses production. The mission focuses on boosting domestic output, reducing import dependence, and enhancing farmers income through a comprehensive value-chain approach. Pulses, being a key source of protein for India’s population, play a critical role in ensuring nutritional security. The initiative targets the expansion of cultivation area to around 310 lakh hectares and increasing production to nearly 350 lakh tonnes by 2030-31.

Key components of the mission include distribution of 87.5 lakh free seed kits over six years, establishment of 1,000 processing units (dal mills), and a cluster-based approach covering 489 districts to intensify production. The scheme also aims to expand pulses cultivation by 35 lakh hectares, including both traditional and non-traditional areas. Additionally, it promotes post-harvest infrastructure, improved seed quality, and assured procurement mechanisms to stabilise prices and support farmers. By addressing supply gaps and strengthening the domestic value chain, the mission is expected to reduce pressure on imports, conserve foreign exchange, and contribute to sustainable agricultural growth while supporting the broader goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
