Union Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal held discussions with Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and industry associations to review strategies aimed at strengthening India's export ecosystem, diversifying markets and enhancing global trade competitiveness. The meeting focused on measures to support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), maximise opportunities arising from Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), foster innovation and deep-tech capabilities, improve export facilitation and expand India's participation in global value chains. Representatives from various EPCs and industry bodies presented sector-specific export performance and progress on key performance indicators (KPIs), reflecting ongoing efforts to improve export competitiveness and strengthen Brand India in international markets.

India's export sector has continued to demonstrate strong momentum, with merchandise exports rising 18% year-on-year to Rs. 4.26 lakh crore (US$ 45.20 billion) in May 2026, the highest level in six months. During April-May FY27, exports increased 16.09% to Rs. 8.38 lakh crore (US$ 88.91 billion), while imports grew 15.14% to Rs. 13.70 lakh crore (US$ 145.35 billion). The trade deficit stood at Rs. 5.32 lakh crore (US$ 56.44 billion) during the period. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has also proposed four KPI pillars comprising export performance, market diversification, exporter ecosystem and policy facilitation to strengthen export promotion efforts. The initiatives are expected to support market expansion, improve exporter outreach and reinforce India's position in global trade.
