Union Finance Minister Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman held a series of bilateral meetings with key global partners on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Asheville, focusing on strengthening trade, investment and financial cooperation. During her meeting with World Bank President Mr. Ajay Banga, she appreciated the continued engagement and speedy processing of Rs. 14,157 crore (US$ 1.5 billion) in Development Policy Financing. The discussions also explored a larger role for the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) in deepening corporate, infrastructure and municipal bond markets through guarantees and greater mobilisation of private capital. Ms. Sitharaman also met International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Ms. Kristalina Georgieva to discuss India's growth trajectory and the global economic outlook, while highlighting the need for robust, evidence-based surveillance frameworks that reflect structural shifts in emerging and developing economies.
The finance minister also discussed expanding economic cooperation with several countries across priority sectors. Her meeting with Poland's Finance Minister Mr. Andrzej Domanski focused on trade, services, defence, energy security and emerging technologies, while discussions with Qatar's Finance Minister Mr. Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari covered trade, investment, energy, infrastructure and logistics. Ms. Sitharaman also discussed bilateral and global economic developments with Russian Finance Minister Mr. Anton Siluanov, including cooperation through the New Development Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Her meeting with South Korean Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Koo Yun-cheol focused on financial cooperation, critical minerals, resilient supply chains and greater investment. These engagements reflect India's continued efforts to broaden international economic partnerships, mobilise private capital and strengthen cooperation across infrastructure, technology and financial systems.
