Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, marked the fifth anniversary of the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan on October 13, 2026, highlighting its role in strengthening multimodal connectivity, accelerating infrastructure development and improving logistics efficiency. Launched on October 13, 2021, the initiative transformed infrastructure planning from a fragmented approach to a coordinated, technology-driven framework by bringing ministries and government departments onto a common platform. It integrates planning across ministries, states and Union Territories through a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based platform. According to government data, the initiative covers 58 Central Ministries and Departments and all 36 States and Union Territories. The platform incorporates seven infrastructure engines: roads, railways, ports, waterways, airports, mass transport and logistics infrastructure. It also integrates schemes such as Bharatmala, Sagarmala, inland waterways and UDAN.

As of October 12, 2026, the platform contained more than 23,493 data layers, while its public platform provided access to 230 approved datasets. These support site suitability analysis, connectivity mapping, infrastructure alignment planning and compliance checks. The initiative has expanded beyond national-level infrastructure planning to cover states, districts and social sectors, strengthening inter-ministerial coordination and data-driven decision-making. Its six guiding principles focus on integrated development, multimodal infrastructure, last-mile connectivity, expedited land acquisition, minimised clearances and reduced ecological impact. The next phase will continue to prioritise coordinated infrastructure planning, faster project execution, improved logistics efficiency and inclusive regional development. The initiative is expected to support stronger connectivity between different modes of transport and improve the movement of goods across the country.
