Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated India’s second-longest cable-stayed bridge at Sigandur in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district. Built across the Sharavathi backwaters between Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli in Sagara taluk, the bridge was constructed at Rs. 472 crore (US$ 54.88 million). The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Sagara town and nearby villages, especially for devotees visiting the renowned Chowdeshwari temple in Sigandur.
The demand for the bridge had been longstanding, following a loss of road connectivity after the construction of the Linganmakki dam in the 1960s. Earlier, people relied on coracles and ferries to cross the backwaters. The new bridge enhances accessibility and is expected to boost tourism and local economic activity. The inauguration ceremony was also attended by Union Minister of Coal, Mines & Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Pralhad Joshi, and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Mr. B. S. Yediyurappa.
