Union Minister Mr. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia launches Mission "Senehjori" for Assam Muga Silk

Assam’s globally renowned Muga silk sector is set for a major transformation with the launch of Mission Senehjori, Assam Muga Silk USP by the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region (MDoNER) in collaboration with the Government of Assam, the Central Silk Board and other stakeholders. The initiative seeks to develop a premium, traceable and export-oriented Muga silk ecosystem by strengthening the entire value chain, from host-plant cultivation and silkworm seed production to weaving, branding, export promotion and tourism. Muga silk, recognised as the world’s only naturally golden silk and India’s first GI-tagged silk, supports nearly 2.6 lakh rearer and weaver families in Assam. However, despite its exclusivity and international recognition, the sector remains significantly under-monetised. The Mission adopts a cluster-based approach across key Muga-producing districts, including Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli and Sualkuchi, while promoting Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Common Facility Centres (CFCs), GI authentication and global market access under the unified “Senehjori” brand.

The Mission is backed by an estimated investment of Rs. 396-411 crore (US$ 44.22-45.89 million) over three years, including Rs. 136-151 crore (US$ 15.19-16.86 million) from MDoNER. It aims to enhance producer incomes, improve infrastructure and position Assam as a leading destination for silk-based cultural and experiential tourism. Key targets by 2028 include the establishment of five modernised Muga silk processing units and a Muga Spun Mill, creation of 30 FPOs and more than 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups, regeneration of 5,000 hectares of host plants, GI authentication of over 80% of traded Muga silk and digital traceability for more than 8,000 households. The Mission will also promote the cultural economy through a Muga Silk Trail, a Silk Tourism Park and annual Muga Utsav festivals, helping establish Assam as a globally recognised centre for luxury silk production and heritage tourism.
