Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal, termed the recently concluded trade agreement between India and the US as ‘a significant step’ towards further enhancing the economic and strategic partnership between the two democracies, and marking the progress of Viksit Bharat in the Parliament. Further in the statement, it was mentioned that the Government has protected the country’s sensitive sectors, including fertiliser and agriculture, while ensuring the most critical safeguards for Indian farmers and producers under the Agreement. It was further stated that the tariff on Indian exports imposed by the United States has been lowered to 18%, as compared to much higher rates that were imposed earlier, and this will increase the competitiveness of ‘Made in India’ products in the US market and provide new opportunities for exports. This agreement is expected to prove to be a catalyst for the growth of manufacturing sectors, provide new opportunities for employment, and provide new avenues for small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), industrialists, and other stakeholders.
Further it was clarified that both countries are now working together to complete the necessary processes and paperwork so that the agreement can be implemented at the earliest. It was also reiterated that the agreement will help to promote inclusive economic growth and sustainable development and further strengthen the partnership between the two countries. Additionally, it was clarified that the protection of energy security and the safeguarding of important Indian interests will always remain the top priority of the Government while expanding the trade relationship with the United States.
