Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles, Mr. Piyush Goyal, said that India must become a quality-conscious nation and adopt quality as an integral part of the process of laying the groundwork for becoming a developed nation by 2047.
According to him, for India to become a global manufacturing giant, it must grow its industrial environment as well as enforce high quality standards for the goods and services it provides. He added that BIS is a critical component of the entire ecosystem. He also praised BIS for being a catalyst in the success of the Make in India programme. He also stated that India can be at the forefront of the modern contemporary testing ecosystem, which is essential for India to become a manufacturing power and carry forward Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' goal.
He stressed that India is on the right track to make testing and laboratory systems an intrinsic part of the globe. Plans have been developed for India to not only meet the aspirations of a billion or more people, but also to meet the needs of a demanding world. He also emphasised the need for BIS to reassess its own processes and reorient itself to be in sync with modern requirements, saying that all three pillars of BIS - standards creation, ensuring adequate lab testing facilities across the country, and product and process certification - will have to become much more contemporary and technology-driven.
