Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, at the India Global Forum (IGF) 2025 in London, underscored India’s strategic global outlook and economic leadership following the historic signing of the India–United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in May 2025. Delivering the keynote at the IGF Mainstage Plenary Session titled “From Agreement to Action: The UK–India FTA,” he reaffirmed India’s focus on translating the FTA into a transformative partnership. He was joined by the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Mr. Jonathan Reynolds, with international journalist Mr. Mark Barton moderating the session.
Mr. Piyush Goyal termed the FTA a symbol of shared ambition between two democracies. He said it reflects India’s ability to craft balanced, future-oriented trade frameworks. He highlighted the next steps, including building institutional mechanisms, ensuring early benefits for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and startups, and enabling the smooth mobility of skilled professionals. On June 19, he also participated in a special session at London’s Science Museum on the UK–India science and technology collaboration, focused on digital public infrastructure, green manufacturing, and innovations in fintech, artificial intelligence, and creative industries. Emphasising the global potential of platforms like Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and CoWIN, he reiterated India’s intent to strengthen ties with the United Kingdom through the FTA by deepening cooperation in defence, advanced manufacturing, and critical technologies.
