Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal to Visit Canada for High-Level Business Interactions and India–Canada CEPA Talks

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal will visit Canada from May 25-27, 2026, to advance negotiations on the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and strengthen bilateral trade and investment engagement between the two countries. During the visit, Mr. Piyush Goyal is scheduled to meet Canadian Minister of International Trade Mr. Maninder Sidhu and Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Mark Carney, along with other senior leaders and industry representatives. A delegation comprising representatives from more than 100 Indian companies from sectors such as energy, metals and mining, automotive, aerospace, tourism, textiles, agriculture, telecommunications and pharmaceuticals is accompanying the Minister. Both countries are aiming to accelerate CEPA negotiations and expand bilateral trade to US$ 50 billion by 2030. In FY26, bilateral trade between India and Canada stood at around Rs. 70,000 crore (US$ 8 billion), with India’s exports valued at Rs. 40,862.50 crore (US$ 4.67 billion) and imports at Rs. 28,700 crore (US$ 3.28 billion).

The visit is expected to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, energy, technology and strategic sectors while supporting the broader revival of India-Canada bilateral relations since mid-2025. The discussions will focus on enhancing collaboration in clean energy, civil nuclear cooperation, artificial intelligence, innovation ecosystems and critical minerals. Canada’s strong natural resource base and India’s growing energy requirements are expected to create new opportunities for long-term partnerships in energy security and energy transition initiatives. Both countries are also exploring stronger engagement through strategic and security dialogues alongside growing economic cooperation. The visit follows recent high-level engagements, including Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Mark Carney’s visit to India in March 2026 and the second round of CEPA negotiations held in New Delhi earlier this month. India’s large diaspora community in Canada, comprising around 2.8 million people, is also expected to continue playing a significant role in strengthening people-to-people and business ties between the two countries.
