India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) recorded its highest-ever monthly transaction volume in July 2026, processing 23.66 billion transactions worth Rs. 29.88 lakh crore (US$ 313.47 billion), further strengthening India's position as a global leader in digital payments. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the milestone reflects the continued expansion of the country's digital payments ecosystem, driven by strong adoption across Tier-2, Tier-3 and rural regions. UPI has emerged as the world's largest real-time payments platform, playing a pivotal role in advancing financial inclusion, enabling seamless digital commerce and supporting the growth of India's digital economy.
Launched on April 11, 2016, UPI has evolved over the past decade from a digital payment’s initiative into the backbone of India's digital public infrastructure. Today, it powers nearly half of the world's instant payment transactions, setting global benchmarks in secure, interoperable and real-time digital payments. The platform has significantly transformed the way individuals and businesses transact by enabling instant, low-cost and convenient payments. The record transaction volume underscores the increasing adoption of digital payments across the country and highlights UPI's growing contribution to strengthening financial inclusion, accelerating digital transformation and supporting India's emergence as a global digital economy leader.
