As per a report by Mint, in the upcoming Budget 2023-24, the US$ 2.42 (Rs. 200) per cooking gas cylinder subsidy for 12 cylinders per year, under Ujjwala Scheme can be extended for another year to achieve 100% cooking gas coverage.

The subsidy was announced in May 2021 for 90 million beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Scheme for FY23. In addition, the Centre is also planning to continue the scheme which provides a free Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder, US$ 19.33 (Rs. 1,600), a free first refill and a free gas stove to women in families living below the poverty line.

An official said that the main reason behind this extension is to improve the penetration in north-east India as Meghalaya is worth performing in India with an LPG coverage of 54.9%, and is followed by Tripura, Jharkhand, and Gujarat.
