US President, Mr. Joe Biden awards National Medals to 2 Indian American scientists

Two Indian American scientists, Mr. Ashok Gadgil and Mr. Subra Suresh received National Medals in the disciplines of science and technology from US President Mr. Joe Biden in Washington.

The US president presented Mr. Ashok Gadgil with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Mr. Gadgil was one of 12 laureates honoured with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Joe Biden presented the National Medal of Science to Mr. Subra Suresh. Mr. Suresh was one of nine people honoured with the National Medal of Science in the East Room of the White House.

At the ceremony, Mr. Joe Biden remarked, “We're determined to return great science to America. For this year's recipients, ‘outstanding’ may be an understatement. They’re extraordinary. They have paved the way for a generation of other scientists and innovators to pursue their own discoveries to unlock our nation’s full potential”.

Berkeley Engineering claims that Mr. Gadgil is a distinguished professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering. He was recognized for “providing life-sustaining resources to communities around the world. His ingenious, low-cost technologies address critical requirements ranging from potable water to fuel-efficient cookstoves. His work is motivated by a conviction in the dignity of all individuals and our ability to overcome the enormous challenges of our day.

Mr. Gadgil is a retired faculty senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and is widely regarded as a "humanitarian inventor".

Mr. Subra Suresh is a professor at Brown University's School of Engineering and a former director of the National Science Foundation.

According to Brown University, he was honoured for his groundbreaking work in the engineering, physical sciences, and life sciences, and in especially for expanding the study of material science and its applications to other fields.

According to the White House, these honours are granted to persons who have made exceptional contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or social and behavioural sciences while serving the nation.
