At the fifth International Conference on Green Metro Systems, Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Mr. Manohar Lal highlighted the importance of transitioning to renewable energy, including solar rooftops and regenerative braking in metros. He emphasized India's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and how initiatives like the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have significantly reduced environmental impact. Innovations such as vertical solar panels, energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) systems, and responsible consumption practices play a vital role in promoting sustainability in urban mobility. He also praised the metro's role in easing congestion and pollution, with 70 lakh daily commuters benefiting from the system.
The conference also featured the launch of India’s first vertical bi-facial solar plant on a metro viaduct and a Megawatt (MW) rooftop solar power plant at Khyber Pass depot. These advancements help Delhi Metro meet its energy needs through solar power, reducing dependency on fossil fuels. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS) Rating System evaluates the sustainability of metro systems, recognizing cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai for their commitment to green infrastructure. Integrating solar power at various metro stations across India showcases the country’s dedication to sustainable urban mobility and energy-efficient transportation.
