The Government think tank NITI Aayog suggests a fresh roadmap wherein India can achieve the status of a developed economy by 2047 while simultaneously securing Net Zero by 2070. As part of this framework, the institution has released four reports on sectors like transport, industry, power, and critical minerals to describe a path where growth and climate goals coincide. Electrification, growing non-fossil sources of energy, raising energy efficiency, a circular economy, and changing behaviour through Mission LiFE are identified as key drivers of this pathway towards sustainable growth. An increase in share in final energy consumption by a large margin and non-fossil power generation expanding to 80-85% by 2070 are predicted to come from renewable energy, storage, nuclear power, and green hydrogen.
The study further contends that an improvement in efficiency levels and higher levels of circulation can result in a fall of almost 20% in the total energy demand by 2070. Also, the energy demand can be met by 90% via electricity, biofuels, and hydrogen in the transportation segment, along with the gradual growth of rail, water, and sharing modes of transportation. Lastly, it provides insights regarding meeting the impending energy demands of the country by ensuring the safe supply of necessary minerals via growth, recycling, and global cooperation. Constructed in coordination between various ministries, the modelling effort aims to shape long-term policy, enhance the country’s energy security, and foster climate-friendly growth.
