Women’s participation in India’s maritime sector has increased by 340% since 2020, reflecting the government’s focus on building a more inclusive and future-ready maritime workforce, according to Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal. Addressing the 10th Indian Ocean Dialogue in New Delhi, Mr. Sonowal further highlighted that initiatives such as ‘Sagar Mein Samman’ are promoting dignity, inclusion and leadership opportunities for women across maritime professions. He stated that the sharp rise in women’s participation aligns with India’s broader maritime vision focused on economic growth, workforce diversity and social empowerment. The event brought together ministers, policymakers, industry leaders and experts from the Indian Ocean Region to discuss maritime security, blue economy cooperation, sustainability and regional connectivity.
Mr. Sonowal emphasised that the “human element” remains central to India’s maritime strategy alongside efforts to strengthen connectivity, sustainability and security in the Indian Ocean Region. He also noted that India’s maritime initiatives are aligned with flagship frameworks such as SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and MAHASAGAR, aimed at enhancing regional cooperation and equitable growth. The Indian Ocean Dialogue, launched in 2014 under the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), serves as a key platform for deliberations on economic cooperation and sustainable development in the region. The growing participation of women in maritime activities reflects India’s continued emphasis on skill development, workforce inclusion and strengthening the maritime ecosystem as part of the country’s long-term blue economy and logistics growth strategy.
