US-based enterprise software firm Workday has announced its plan to establish a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in the city of Chennai, marking the company’s significant expansion of its presence in the country. As part of this initiative, the company has signed one of the largest office leasing deals for an enterprise office space in the city, and for about 1.94 lakh square feet of office space with Cowrks and Brookfield Properties. The company has established this office as a key location for its product development, technology innovation, and global operations support, thereby indicating the growing importance of the Indian market to the company’s overall global strategy. The move also indicates the growing importance of the city of Chennai as a key location for the establishment of GCCs, given the presence of a large pool of talent, world-class infrastructure, and favourable government policies.

The establishment of the GCC is also in line with the increasing trend of multinational corporations seeking to increase their footprint in India, driven by cost benefits and access to a skilled workforce. The investment of Workday is also expected to contribute positively to employment creation and the development of the local technology industry, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and software development. The development is also expected to reinforce India’s status as a global hub for GCCs, particularly with cities such as Chennai experiencing large-scale office commitments. The increasing need for premium office spaces, driven by the expansion of GCCs and digital transformation initiatives, is also expected to sustain growth in India’s commercial property market, enhancing India’s status in global networks.
