The World Bank Group has approved financial support of Rs. 8,435.42 crore (US$ 890 million) to strengthen India's national rooftop solar programme, reinforcing the country's transition towards clean and affordable energy. The funding will support the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to expand rooftop solar installations across millions of households while improving access to reliable electricity. The programme is expected to help reduce electricity expenses for residential consumers, lower carbon emissions and strengthen India's renewable energy ecosystem. The initiative also aligns with the country's broader clean energy ambitions by promoting distributed renewable energy generation and enhancing energy security.
The financing package is expected to create around 1.7 million employment opportunities across renewable energy manufacturing, installation, logistics, supply chains and related services, supporting the growth of a robust domestic solar value chain. The World Bank's assistance will also help strengthen institutional capacity, improve programme implementation and mobilise greater private sector participation in rooftop solar deployment. By expanding access to rooftop solar systems, the initiative is expected to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions while contributing to India's long-term sustainability and climate objectives. The World Bank's support further reinforces global confidence in India's renewable energy sector and its efforts to scale up clean energy infrastructure through collaborative financing and policy support.
