World Maritime Day: Union Minister Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal says maritime sector is anchor for India’s progress

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal, said India’s maritime sector is a strong anchor for national progress on World Maritime Day. The government is focusing on infrastructure modernisation, policy reforms and a Seafarer First vision to support the sector’s growth. World Maritime Day is being observed on September 24, 2026, to highlight the importance of the maritime sector and recognise the contribution of seafarers and maritime professionals to global trade and development. The occasion also highlights the role of shipping in connecting countries, transporting essential goods and supporting economies worldwide. The 2026 observance focuses on the theme, ‘From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence’, selected by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for 2026 and 2027.
The theme highlights the IMO’s focus on helping Member States implement maritime policies and regulations through technical assistance, training and other essential services. Established through a Convention adopted on March 6, 1948, the IMO develops and maintains an international regulatory framework covering maritime safety, security, environmental protection and other aspects of international shipping. The Convention entered into force on March 17, 1958, and the organisation held its first meeting in January 1959. International shipping transports more than 80% of global trade, connecting people and communities worldwide. World Maritime Day provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of the maritime sector and seafarers while emphasising the importance of effectively implementing international maritime standards. India’s focus on infrastructure modernisation, policy reforms and seafarer welfare aligns with the broader objective of strengthening maritime capabilities and supporting the sector’s contribution to trade and economic development.
