Amul, India’s iconic dairy brand, has announced the establishment of the world’s largest curd manufacturing facility in Kolkata, marking a significant expansion of its operations in West Bengal. The new facility, backed by an Rs. 600 crore (US$ 68.6 million) investment, will produce 10 lakh kilograms (KG) of curd daily and process 1.5 million litres of milk daily. The plant, located at Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, will be developed in two phases by Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd. The facility is set to cater to the growing demand for curd, especially the region's local varieties like 'tok doi' and 'mishti doi.'

This investment is also seen as a major contribution to India's dairy industry, particularly under the White Revolution 2.0 initiative led by the Ministry of Cooperation. Amul’s new plant will bolster the dairy cooperative movement in Bengal and is expected to strengthen its market presence further. Amul is the largest fresh milk brand in West Bengal, selling over one million litres of milk sdaily, and has built a robust milk procurement network. The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF), which owns the Amul brand, saw an 8% growth in turnover in 2023-24 and expects double-digit revenue growth this year. Additionally, GCMMF ranks eighth globally in milk processing and exports its products to nearly 50 countries.
