World's largest khadi national flag, weighing 1,000 kg, unveiled in Leh

On Saturday, October 02, 2021, the Army's Fire and Fury Corps held a historic ceremony at Leh Garrison, where Mr. R.K. Mathur, LG of Ladakh, unfurled a massive national flag on a peak overlooking the Leh valley.

The ceremony was also attended by General M.M. Naravane, Chief of the Army Staff, and Lieutenant General Y.K. Joshi, GOC-in-C Northern Command. Senior military and civilian authorities were also present, including Lieutenant General PGKA Menon, GOC, Fire and Fury Corps.

The spectacular celebration commemorated the 152nd birthday of India's Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, as well as the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav', which marked the 75th anniversary of the country's independence.

The army stated, “The flag that was unfurled is the biggest hand woven and hand spun cotton Khadi Flag ever made in India, spanning 225 feet by 150 feet and weighing 1,000 kg.”

“The flag is manufactured by Khadi Dyers and Printers, which is associated with the Khadi Village and Industries Commission and is located in Mumbai.”

The Sura-Soi Engineer Regiment was tasked with transporting the national flag from Mumbai to Leh, as well as the difficult duty of placing it at the top of the steep mountains overlooking Leh for the unveiling event.

“A number of activities were held to commemorate the historic occasion. When the flag was unveiled, the Brass Band of the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre, along with students from Ladakh Ignited Minds, performed the National Anthem” army said.

The Army Aviation Squadron's Advanced Light Helicopters flew above the national flag and sprinkled flower petals on it.

This national flag is the world's largest flag made of Khadi. Its length is 225 ft, width 150 ft, and weighs 1400 kg. The flag covers 37,500 sq ft area. It took 49 days to complete this flag: Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chairman, Khadi and Village Industries Commission in Leh.
